Kawa Obi Sling 3198E

MONIKO STORE

Our casual, swing clutch, with adjustable leather strap and leather tassel.    One side is black leather, and other is vintage 'obi': the sash worn with kimono at formal occasions.

The design on the obi features the classic Tsuru.  The crane frequently appears on wedding kimono as it represents hope, longevity and good fortune, because of its fabled life span of a thousand years. It also represents fidelity, as cranes are known to mate for life. It is one of the most popular origami shapes.

The wavy lines, called tatewaku, represent steam rising from plants during the first warmth of spring, and is therefore an auspicious omen.

This vintage Fukuro Obi was sourced from the Osaka area of Japan.  It is approximately 30 years old, and in excellent condition.

Handmade by a self help group in Bali.
