Kawa Obi Sling 1735

Our casual, swing clutch, with chain strap and leather tassel.    One side is leather, and other is vintage 'obi': the sash worn with kimono at formal occasions.

This obi fabric is adorned with the classic repeating ‘seigaiha’ pattern, called ‘blue waves’, or fish scales.  On this design, the edge of each scale represents a 'yukiwa' snowflake.   Inside each one sits a section of ‘kiku’ chrysanthemum, the Flower of the Imperial House and and often used icon of Japan itself and represents rejuvenation and longevity.

This vintage Fukuro Obi was sourced from the Osaka area of Japan.  It is approximately 30 years old, and in excellent condition.

Handmade by self help groups in Cambodia.
