A bold pattern of ‘sensu’ fans containing ever popular ‘momiji’, maple leaves, with 'take', bamboo, and ‘matsu’, the pine, both treasured for their strength and longevity. You will also see 'shippou’, a never ending pattern of interlocking circles meaning gemstones or treasures, with traditional ‘seigaiha’ repeating waves, and 'kikkou' repeating hexagons that also represent longevity as they look like tortoiseshell, and the tortoise was once thought to live for 1000 years.
Gold painted details highlight the pattern, adding an extra dimension.
The pattern is also printed on a rinzu silk kimono: a kind of damask silk which has more sensu motifs woven into it’s surface, for extra lustre and texture.
This vintage kimono was sourced from the Osaka area of Japan. It is approximately 30 years old.
