Fukuro Obi Clutch 3818A

Our signature clutch, hand made from vintage 'obi': the sash worn with kimono at formal occasions.

A classic pattern of ‘kikkou’ and ‘choucho’.  The hexagonal kikkou pattern resembles the tortoiseshell and is, thus, associated with longevity.  'Choucho', butterflies have been a popular symbol since the Nara period, 710 to 794 AD. They are signs of joy and longevity also.

Woven with pale red, maroon, green, champagne, gold and silver threads on a black silk background.

This vintage Fukuro Obi was sourced from the Osaka area of Japan.  It is approximately 30 -40 years old, and in excellent condition.

Handmade by self help groups in Cambodia.
