Fukuro Obi Clutch 4008A

$235.00 USD

Our signature clutch, hand made from vintage 'obi': the sash worn with kimono at formal occasions.

A classical bold pattern of gold/silver and red 'tsuru' crane, a motif that frequently appears on wedding kimono as it represents hope, longevity and good fortune, because of its fabled life span of a thousand years. It also represents fidelity, as Japanese cranes are known to pair for life.  It sits within Matsu, the pine tree, which is believed to live for 100 years. It is a hardy plant that symbolises strength and long life. Samurai often planted these trees: it was believed that the long needle-like leaves, Matsuba, protected them from demons.

This vintage Fukuro Obi was sourced from the Osaka area of Japan.  It is approximately 30 to 40 years old, and in excellent condition.

Handmade by self help groups in Cambodia.
