Fukuro Obi Clutch 3704B

Our signature clutch, hand made from vintage 'obi': the sash worn with kimono at formal occasions.

A classic pattern of ‘shippou/shokkou’ amongst 'ryuusu'.  Shippou is a never ending pattern of interlocking Circles. A symbol of gemstones or treasures: the design originally represented the metal and enamel technique of cloisonné.  Shokkuo is the name of the pattern when it contains a flower or family crest in the centre, like this one.  'Ryuusu', wandering streams are often found on the fabric designs, usually a background or linking other design motifs such as here.

This obi is heavily embroidered with warm red thread and champagne shade gold. Some of the red weaving can be easily snagged with jewellery so need to be handled gently!

This vintage Fukuro Obi was sourced from the Osaka area of Japan.  It is approximately 30 -40 years old, and in excellent condition.

Handmade by self help groups in Cambodia.
