Fukuro Obi Clutch 2819D

Our signature clutch, hand made from vintage 'obi': the sash worn with kimono at formal occasions.

A delightful pattern of Ume, Momiji and Matsu cover this silk obi.

Ume, plum blossom is a favourite within Japan, it’s beauty and fragrance being reflected across art forms.  it is the first blossom of the year to bloom, and represents endurance and good fortune.  Momiji, maple leaves, are celebrated in autumn, in a similar way as Ume are in the spring, for their amazing displays of colour.

Matsu, the Pine Tree, is a hardy plant that symbolises strength and long life. Kikkou resembles the tortoise shell, and the tortoise was thought to live for one thousand years.

The design is woven from two tones of pink, cheery red, baby blue, and pale greens, amongst the white, gold and silver thread.  Please note that the more loosely woven areas should be handled gently as the thread can be caught on jewellery.

This vintage Fukuro Obi was sourced from the Osaka area of Japan.  It is approximately 40 years old, and in excellent condition.

Handmade by self help groups in Cambodia.
