Fukuro Obi Clutch 2774B

Our signature clutch, hand made from vintage 'obi': the sash worn with kimono at formal occasions.

The shimmering Sensu adorning this black obi, can be seen on all forms of Japanese design. Sensu are the fans used in traditional dance performances.

Within the Sensu are Kiku: the Chrysanthemum, is the Flower of the Imperial House and and often used icon of Japan itself (it features on Japanese passports). It represents rejuvenation and longevity.

Noshi strips swirl around the background: trips of tied Abalone, used to be given to fisherman as a talisman when venturing out to sea. Today ribbons are used to make these good luck charms, and are given to all.

Woven with multi-tone red and orange threads, with gold, white and silver highlights.

This vintage Fukuro Obi was sourced from the Osaka area of Japan.  It is approximately 40 years old, and in excellent condition.

Handmade by self help groups in Cambodia.
