Fukuro Obi Clutch 2766D

MONIKO STORE

Our signature clutch, hand made from vintage 'obi': the sash worn with kimono at formal occasions.

A striking blend of bright blue and green 'tsuru' crane, and orange and red and gold 'matsu' pine trees.

Tsuru, the crane frequently appears on wedding kimono as it represents hope, longevity and good fortune, because of its fabled life span of a thousand years. It also represents fidelity, as Japanese cranes are known to mate for life.

Matsu, the Pine tree is believed to live for 100 years. It is a hardy plant that symbolises strength and long life. Samurai often planted these trees: it was believed that the long needle-like leaves, Matsuba, protected them from demons.

This vintage Fukuro Obi was sourced from the Osaka area of Japan.  It is approximately 20 to 30 years old, and in excellent condition.

Handmade by self help groups in Cambodia.
