Our signature clutch, hand made from vintage 'obi': the sash worn with kimono at formal occasions.
Bold Seigaiha cover this black obi, these ‘wave’ or ‘scale’ patterns can be seen on all forms of Japanese design. it was originally used on maps to depict the sea, and was made popular by the artist Seikai Kanshichi. Depicted within each wave, is Matsu, the Pine Tree, which is believed to live for 100 years. It is a hardy plant that symbolises strength and long life. Samurai often planted these trees: it was believed that the long needle-like leaves, Matsuba, protected them from demons.
This vintage Fukuro Obi was sourced from the Osaka area of Japan. It is approximately 40 years old, and in excellent condition.
